Hyphen

Used to combine words, separate groups of numbers, or break a word at the end of a line.

The term president-elect refers to a person who has been elected to office, but not yet installed.

Minus

An arithmetic operator.

100−1 = 99

En Dash

Used to separate items in a range or series.

The American Civil War: 1861–1865
Open: Monday–Friday

Em Dash

Used to separate an inserted clause from the main clause in a sentence.

The em-dash — when used correctly — can enhance readability.
Windows or Macintosh — it's your choice.
